Wer durch die Natur wandert, reitet, radelt, fährt benötigt abends eine Herberge oder muss ein Camp einrichten. Das ist nicht neu, jedoch erscheint `Camping´ erst im 19. Jahrhundert und bezeichnet dann ein Phänomen, bei dem individuell Reisende mit Fahrzeugen zwar individuell unterwegs sind, aber massenhaft denselben Wegen folgen, so dass eine Infrastruktur für diese Zielgruppe entsteht, zuerst der Campingplatz oder Caravanpark.

Die Anfänge dafür sind in den USA zu suchen. Bereits 1922 erscheint eine Hochschulschrift, die sich diesem Thema widmet ¹⁾. Der Autor selbst äußert sich einleitend erstaunt über das neue Phänomen(„which has arisen just recently“) und nennt zwei Gründe:

• first, the rapid perfection of the automobile and,
• second, the improvement of state and interstate roads.

Dem Straßensystem und der Qualität der Straßen misst er dabei die größere Bedeutung zu und wertet: »It is no wonder that we are considered the greatest touring population on the earth - because of the great improvement in the automobile and increased cross-country travel the question of a safe, cheap, comfortable and convenient place to stop over has arisen. To fulfill this need the automobile tourist camping ground has come into existence. For some years communities have set aside places where the tourist was allowed to pitch his tent and trust to his own ingenuity for his health and comfort.« Diese Arbeit enthält 18 Seiten mit Listen von Campsites in den USA.
